Botox vs. Dysport vs. Xeomin

All three are FDA-approved neurotoxins with similar results. Here's how they differ in onset, spread and formula, and how to choose.

The short answer

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are all FDA-approved neurotoxins made from botulinum toxin type A. They work the same way, relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines, and give similar results that last about three to four months. The differences are small but can matter for your face and goals.

Botox

Botox is the most studied and best-known neurotoxin. Its precise spread makes it a go-to for small, detailed areas like crow's feet and the lip flip.

Dysport

Dysport may kick in a day or two sooner and spreads a bit more, which some injectors like for larger areas such as the forehead. Dysport is dosed differently, so you'll need more units than Botox, but that doesn't mean it costs more overall.

Xeomin

Xeomin is a purified neurotoxin without the accessory proteins found in Botox and Dysport. Some people who feel their results have faded over time try Xeomin, though research on this is still developing.

Which one is right for you?

For most people, all three give excellent results. Your injector will recommend one based on the areas you're treating, how your muscles move and how you've responded to neurotoxins before. Many people stick with the one that works best for them.
