How lip filler works

Natural or fuller: planning your look

If you'd like more volume, it's safer and more natural-looking to build gradually over two or more visits than to add a lot at once. Bring photos of lips you like, and your injector will tell you honestly what will suit your face.

Before your appointment

• If your doctor says it's safe, pause optional supplements that can increase bruising, like fish oil, vitamin E and ibuprofen, for a few days beforehand.
• Skip alcohol for 24 hours before treatment.
• If you get cold sores, tell us ahead of time. An antiviral may be recommended before lip treatment.
• Schedule at least two weeks before a wedding, photo shoot or big event.

What to expect at your appointment

Consultation. We talk through the look you want, review photos if you have them and recommend an amount that suits your face.

Treatment. After numbing, your injector places the filler in small amounts, checking symmetry as they go. Most appointments take 30 to 45 minutes.

Afterward. Expect swelling and possibly some bruising for a few days. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and heat for 24 hours.

Healing day by day

• Days 1 to 3: Swelling is usually at its peak, and lips can look uneven or firmer than expected. That's normal.
• Days 4 to 7: Most swelling and any bruising fade.
• Weeks 2 to 4: The filler settles into its final shape. This is when to judge your results and book a touch-up if you need one.

Use a cold compress, stay hydrated and avoid pressing on your lips. Call us right away if you notice increasing pain, blanching or color changes in the skin.

Results

You'll see a difference right away, with final results once swelling settles in about two weeks. Individual results vary.

How long does lip filler last?

Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last about 6 to 12 months. Lips move constantly, so filler there tends to break down faster than in the cheeks or chin.
