How a peel works
The acid dissolves the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. Over the next several days, that outer layer sheds in light flakes. The skin underneath has more even color and a smoother surface, and repeated peels encourage healthy cell turnover. Stronger peels reach a little deeper and treat more, with more visible peeling.

Peels for darker skin tones
Light peels suit most skin tones. Deeper skin tones can be more prone to dark marks after irritation, so strength is built up gradually and sun protection matters even more. Your provider will match the peel to your skin, and tell you if SkinPen microneedling or another option is a better fit.
Your peel appointment
- Skin check. Your provider looks at your concerns, your current products and any recent treatments.
- Cleanse and prep. Oil and makeup are removed so the peel absorbs evenly.
- Application. The solution goes on in layers and stays on for a set time while you feel tingling or warmth.
- Neutralize and protect. The peel is neutralized or removed, then soothing products and SPF go on.
Most appointments take about 30 minutes, and you can drive yourself home.

What to know before your treatment
- Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids for two to three days beforehand.
- Avoid tanning, sunburn and facial waxing in the week before.
- Tell us if you get cold sores, have taken isotretinoin (Accutane), or are pregnant or breastfeeding, since your plan may change.
- Broken skin, a rash or a sunburn means we'll move your peel so the skin can heal first.
Aftercare
- For 2 days, stay cool: no hot showers on your face, hot tubs, saunas, swimming, heavy sweating, loofahs or hair dryers on your face. Don't ice the area.
- Skip makeup the day of your peel.
- Use your post-peel products and moisturizer at least twice a day until flaking stops.
- Don't pick or pull at peeling skin, which can cause dark spots.
- Wear SPF 30 or higher daily, avoid direct sun, and stay out of tanning beds for 2 weeks.
