How laser hair removal works

The laser sends light energy into the hair follicle, where the pigment absorbs it and heat damages the follicle's ability to grow new hair. Because hair grows in cycles, a series of sessions catches each follicle during its active phase.

Our laser

We use a Cutera laser platform with a 1064nm Nd:YAG handpiece. This longer wavelength reaches the follicle while passing more safely through the skin's surface pigment, which is why it's a strong choice for a wide range of skin tones, including darker skin. The same Cutera platform also powers our Laser Genesis, IPL photofacial and Titan skin tightening treatments.

What to expect at your appointment

Your provider confirms your skin and hair type, adjusts the laser settings, and treats the area in quick passes. Small areas take just a few minutes.

Afterward, the skin may look pink or slightly swollen for a few hours. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen between sessions.

Results

You'll notice less hair after each session, with the biggest reduction after completing your series. Individual results vary.

How long does each session take?

Times vary with the size of the area and the density of your hair.

How often should I come in?

Sessions are spaced so each one catches a new group of follicles in their growth phase. Facial areas are usually treated every four to six weeks, and body areas every six to eight weeks. Keeping to your schedule gives you the best reduction from your series.

Before and after your session

• Shave the area 24 hours before. Don't wax, pluck or thread for four to six weeks beforehand, because the laser needs the hair root in place.
• Avoid sun, tanning beds and self-tanner for about two weeks before and after treatment.
• Arrive with clean skin, free of lotion, deodorant or makeup on the treatment area.
• Afterward, skip hot showers, saunas and hard workouts for 24 hours, and wear SPF 30 or higher on treated skin.
• Treated hairs shed over the next one to three weeks. That's normal.

Side effects

Temporary redness and small bumps around the follicles are common and usually settle within a few hours to a day. Blistering or changes in skin color are uncommon and are much less likely when settings are matched to your skin type and you avoid sun exposure. Tell us about any medications that make you sun-sensitive before your session.
