Aftercare guide: what to do after every treatment

When can you work out, drink or wear makeup after your treatment? A quick table for every treatment, plus full aftercare for each one.

What you do in the first day or two after a treatment affects your results. Use the quick reference table to see the most common questions at a glance, then jump to your treatment below for the full details. Your provider may give you instructions specific to your treatment. If they differ from this guide, follow your provider.

Botox aftercare

Covers Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and the Botox lip flip.

  • Stay upright for about 4 hours, and don't lie down for a nap right away.
  • Don't rub, press or massage the treated areas that day.
  • Skip strenuous exercise until the next day.
  • Avoid facials, saunas and hot yoga for 24 hours.
  • Skip alcohol for 24 hours to lower the chance of bruising.
  • Small bumps at the injection points usually fade within 15 to 30 minutes.

Results start in 3 to 5 days, with full results at about 2 weeks. Read more in working out after Botox and your first Botox appointment.

Filler aftercare

Covers lip filler, dermal fillers and facial balancing.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and hot yoga for 24 hours.
  • Don't press, rub or massage the treated area unless your injector tells you to.
  • Use a cold compress for swelling, and sleep with your head slightly raised the first night.
  • Lip swelling usually peaks in the first 1 to 3 days and settles within a week.
  • Judge your final result at about 2 weeks, once swelling is gone.

Sculptra and non-surgical BBL aftercare

Covers Sculptra, Radiesse and the non-surgical BBL.

  • Massage the area as directed, often 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days after Sculptra.
  • Expect mild soreness, swelling or bruising for a few days.
  • Skip strenuous workouts for 1 to 2 days, especially lower-body workouts after a BBL.
  • Stay hydrated to support healing.

Any fullness right after Sculptra is temporary. Real results build over the following months.

Kybella aftercare

  • Expect swelling under the chin for several days, sometimes longer after the first session.
  • Use a cold compress and sleep with your head slightly raised to ease swelling.
  • Skip strenuous exercise for 1 to 2 days, and avoid alcohol for 24 hours.
  • Don't massage the area unless your provider tells you to.

Facial and Hydrafacial aftercare

Covers the Hydrafacial, medical facials, dermaplaning and microdermabrasion.

  • Skip makeup for the rest of the day if you can.
  • Hold off on retinoids, acids and scrubs for about 48 hours.
  • Skip heavy workouts for 24 hours after exfoliating treatments.
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher every day, and drink plenty of water.

Chemical peel aftercare

  • Let peeling skin shed on its own. Don't pick or pull at it.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, and SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid retinoids, acids and scrubs until your skin has finished peeling.
  • Skip workouts, saunas and anything that makes you sweat heavily for about 48 hours.

Microneedling aftercare

Covers microneedling, with or without PRP, and the PRP facial.

  • For the first 24 hours, use only a gentle cleanser and the aftercare products we recommend. No makeup.
  • Avoid retinoids, acids and exfoliants for 3 to 5 days.
  • Skip workouts, saunas and swimming for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Stay out of direct sun and wear SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Light flaking around day 2 or 3 is normal. Let it shed on its own.

Laser hair removal aftercare

  • Skip hot showers, saunas and hard workouts for 24 hours.
  • Avoid sun, tanning beds and self-tanner for about 2 weeks, and wear SPF 30 or higher on treated skin.
  • Shaving between sessions is fine. Don't wax, pluck or thread.
  • Treated hairs shed over the next 1 to 3 weeks. That's normal.

IPL and laser skin treatment aftercare

Covers the IPL photofacial, Laser Genesis and Titan skin tightening.

  • Mild redness is common for a few hours.
  • After IPL, dark spots often darken and flake off over 1 to 2 weeks. Don't pick at them.
  • Avoid sun for about 2 weeks, and wear SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Skip hot showers, saunas and hard workouts for 24 hours.

IV therapy aftercare

  • Keep the bandage on for about 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Light activity is fine the same day.
  • A small bruise at the IV site is common and fades within days.
  • Keep drinking water, and call us if you notice swelling, redness or pain at the IV site.

When to call us right away

Call us, or seek urgent care, if you notice any of the following after a treatment:

  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Skin that turns white, gray, blue or dusky, especially after filler
  • Vision changes after any facial injection
  • Signs of infection, like spreading redness, warmth, pus or a fever
  • Trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing
