Acne scar treatment in Boca Raton at Cosmetica Med Spa starts at $399 a session with SkinPen, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device and one cleared to improve the look of facial acne scars in every skin type. Your plan is matched to the type of scar you have, combining microneedling, PRP, chemical peels or filler as needed, and every plan is overseen by our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Andrei Gherghina. Most people see their scars become noticeably softer over a series of treatments.

What type of acne scar do you have?

Acne scars aren't all the same, and the type decides the treatment. Most people have a mix.

Scar typeWhat it looks likeWhat usually helps most
Rolling scarsWide, soft dips that make the skin look wavy, especially in side lightSkinPen microneedling, plus filler to lift deeper dips
Boxcar scarsRound or oval dents with sharper edges, like small cratersA series of SkinPen microneedling, often with PRP
Ice pick scarsNarrow, deep pits, like a large open poreThe hardest type to treat. A focused series of SkinPen microneedling, with more sessions, makes them much less noticeable
Dark marks (not true scars)Flat brown spots where pimples wereChemical peels and daily sun protection
Red or pink marks (not true scars)Flat red spots that linger after breakoutsTime, gentle skin care and sun protection. Laser Genesis can help calm redness

Flat dark or red marks often fade with the right care, while true scars change the texture of the skin and need collagen-building treatment. Your provider will tell you which you have at your consultation.

How we treat acne scars

SkinPen microneedling

SkinPen creates thousands of tiny channels in the skin. Your body responds by building new collagen, which gradually fills in and smooths scars from below. SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults 22 and older, in all skin types (Fitzpatrick I to VI). It uses no heat, so the risk of dark marks afterward is lower than with many lasers, which matters for medium and darker skin tones.

Microneedling with PRP

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is made from a small sample of your own blood and applied during microneedling. It may support healing and boost results, and many people with moderate scarring choose it. See our PRP facial.

Filler for rolling scars

For wide, rolling scars, a small amount of filler placed under the scar lifts it level with the surrounding skin, and the difference shows right away. Filler results last about 6 to 12 months, and pairing filler with microneedling often gives the best long-term improvement. See scar correction.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels fade the dark marks breakouts leave behind and smooth shallow texture, and they help clear clogged pores. They're often used between microneedling sessions.

What results to expect

Acne scars improve gradually, because new collagen takes time to build. With the right plan and enough sessions, scars become shallower, smoother and much less noticeable, and many people find they fade to the point where they're hard to see. In SkinPen's FDA clinical study, 9 in 10 people said their acne scars looked better six months after three treatments.

  • Week 1: skin looks brighter as it heals.
  • Weeks 4 to 6: early texture changes, around the time of your second session.
  • 3 to 6 months: the biggest change, as collagen keeps building after each session.
  • After your series: improvement continues for months. A maintenance session once or twice a year helps keep it.

Individual results vary.

Your first visit, step by step

  1. Scar assessment. Your provider looks at your scars in different light, identifies the types and asks about your acne history and current skin care.
  2. Your plan. You get a plan with which treatments, how many sessions and the total cost, before anything is done.
  3. First treatment. For microneedling, numbing cream goes on for about 30 minutes, then the treatment takes about 30 minutes.
  4. Healing. Expect a pink, sunburn-like look for 1 to 2 days, then light flaking.
  5. Next sessions. We review your progress at each visit and adjust the plan.

Before you start

  • Get active acne under control first. We don't microneedle over active breakouts. If you're still breaking out, a medical facial or chemical peel plan can come first.
  • Isotretinoin (Accutane). Wait six months after finishing before microneedling.
  • Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids three to five days before treatment.
  • Avoid sunburn and tanning for about a week beforehand.
  • Pregnancy. Microneedling isn't recommended during pregnancy.

Acne scars in darker skin tones

Medium and darker skin tones are more likely to get dark marks after acne and after aggressive treatments. SkinPen is FDA-cleared for all skin types and doesn't use heat, so it's a strong option. Peels are started gently and stepped up as your skin allows. If you also have patchy pigment on the cheeks, see melasma treatment.

Aftercare

  • Don't touch, rub or pick at your skin. Let flaking shed on its own.
  • No makeup for 24 hours after microneedling.
  • For 48 hours, skip retinoids, acids, vitamin C, intense exercise, hot showers, saunas and pools.
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher every day, and stay out of the sun while your skin heals.

Frequently asked questions

How much does acne scar treatment cost in Boca Raton?

At Cosmetica Med Spa, SkinPen microneedling is $399 per session, or $599 with PRP. Most people need a series of 3 to 6 sessions, so a full plan is usually $1,197 to $2,394, or $1,797 to $3,594 with PRP. Chemical peels start at $299 and filler for scars starts at $699. Your provider confirms your plan and price before treatment.

What is the best treatment for acne scars?

It depends on the type of scar. For most rolling and boxcar scars, a series of SkinPen microneedling, sometimes with PRP, is the core treatment. Deep rolling scars can also be lifted with filler, and dark marks respond best to chemical peels.

Can acne scars go away?

With the right treatment and enough sessions, acne scars can fade dramatically, and many people get to the point where they're hard to notice. How far yours fade depends on the type and depth of your scars, and your provider maps out the plan to get you there.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people need 3 to 6 microneedling sessions, about a month apart. Mild scarring may need fewer, and deeper scarring usually needs more.

Does microneedling really work on acne scars?

Yes. SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults 22 and older, in all skin types. In its FDA clinical study, 9 in 10 people said their acne scars looked better six months after three treatments. Rolling and shallow boxcar scars tend to respond best.

Is microneedling with PRP worth it for acne scars?

Many people with moderate scarring choose it. PRP comes from your own blood and may support healing and boost results. It's $599 per session instead of $399. Your provider will tell you whether it makes sense for your skin.

Can ice pick scars be treated?

Yes. Ice pick scars are the hardest type to treat, so they usually need more sessions, but a focused series of SkinPen microneedling can make them much less noticeable.

Can filler fix acne scars?

Filler works well on wide, rolling scars. It lifts the scar level with the surrounding skin right away, and results last about 6 to 12 months. It doesn't work on narrow ice pick scars. See scar correction.

Are dark spots after acne the same as scars?

No. Flat brown or red marks after a breakout aren't true scars, and they often fade with chemical peels, gentle skin care and sun protection. True scars change the texture of the skin and need collagen-building treatment.

Can I treat acne scars while I still have breakouts?

We don't microneedle over active acne. If you're still breaking out, we'll start with a medical facial or peel plan to calm your skin, then move to scar treatment.

How long after Accutane can I treat acne scars?

Wait six months after finishing isotretinoin (Accutane) before microneedling.

How long do acne scar results last?

Improvement from microneedling is long-lasting, because it comes from your own new collagen. A maintenance session once or twice a year helps keep it. Filler for scars lasts about 6 to 12 months.

Is acne scar treatment safe for darker skin?

Yes, with the right treatment. SkinPen is FDA-cleared for all skin types and uses no heat, which lowers the risk of dark marks afterward. Peels are started gently for darker skin tones.
